EU Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighborhood Policy Olivér Várhelyi said yesterday from Tirana that the audit and evaluation of judges and prosecutors is the key to Albania moving forward and organizing the first intergovernmental conference and taking part in further negotiations for integration.
“I also went to visit the members of the auditing bodies. The audit and evaluation of judges and prosecutors is the key, in order for Albania can go ahead and organize the first intergovernmental conference and start further accession negotiations”, the commissioner said.
It is necessary, he continued, for these institutions to do their job.
“They are doing a very important job. I do not think they know how famous they are outside of Tirana, as we use them as a role model to compare them with others”, Várhelyi said.
The commissioner, meanwhile, added that he also spoke in Tirana about other criteria, including the electoral reform.
“We need a credible reform, based on which we will have free and fair elections. This in fact will be the test and this work that will be done will also be the test work for the first intergovernmental conference, which I believe will take place this year”, he said.
As for the Constitutional Court, the Commissioner said that judges need to do the job.
“I see that there are still challenges, the work needs to be stepped up, the fight against corruption and organized crime needs to continue. We are recently looking at a history of particularly important law enforcement operations and successful international ones. We are also looking at this balance. We see that there is also a mobilisation for the Constitutional Court. We need judges there to do the job. We need the Constitutional Court”, he said./ibna
