Albania: EU-Western Balkans Summit is EU’s confirmation for its commitment to the region

The EU-Western Balkans Summit on May 6 is an opportunity to reaffirm EU’s historic, political and economic commitment to the region, said Taulant Balla, President of the Parliamentary Group of the Socialist Party of Albania.

Balla added that the summit is a great opportunity for representatives of the Western Balkans to reaffirm their commitment to the rule of law, democracy and ongoing reforms.

According to Balla, the Zagreb Summit is a clear message of the EU’s irreversible commitment to the European perspective of the Western Balkan countries.

“As Co-Chair of the EU-Albania Parliamentary Committee on Stabilization and Association, I strand by the statement on behalf of the European Parliament from the President of the Foreign Affairs Committee, the rapporteurs and heads of the European Parliament for Albania, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Serbia, who welcome the May 6 Western Balkans Summit as an opportunity to reaffirm the EU’s historic, political and economic commitment to the region”, he said.

As he said, the statement of the Zagreb Summit emphasizes the importance of continuing the intensive cooperation in the framework of the measures against COVID-19 and the socio-economic impact of this pandemic.

“We thank the European Parliament for its unwavering support for EU accession before the meeting of EU-Western Balkan leaders on 6 May 2020. Albania is committed to the reform process. We welcome the role of parliaments as a driving force in the accession process. The EU is on the side of Western Balkans”, Balla said./ibna
