Ministry of Foreign Affairs has congratulated Montenegro for the invitation that it has received to become a NATO member, during the second day of proceedings of the North Atlantic Alliance Ministerial in Brussels.
Foreign Minister Ditmir Bushati said that “Albania has been and remains a strong promoter of the enlargement of the Alliance, as Euro-Atlantic integration is a vision for a safer and more sustainable trans-Atlantic community”.
Albania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs expresses his conviction that “Montenegro’s accession in the NATO has a geostrategic importance, not only for the alliance, but also for our entire region, as it consolidates the architecture of security in the Adriatic space”. NATO officially invited Montenegro on Wednesday to join the military alliance led by the United States of America. Jens Stoltenberg, NATO’s Secretary General, said that this is “a historical decision”.
This is the first NATO enlargement in the past 6 years, as in 2009, it opened its doors to Albania’s accession.
Russia has always warned against the accession of Montenegro in the NATO, by saying that this would be a threat for stability in Western Balkan.
Negotiations for the entry of Montenegro in the NATO are expected to last a year. /ibna/
