On April 1, 2009, Albania formally became a member of NATO’s Euro-Atlantic Alliance, with Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Olta Xhaçka saluting the 12th anniversary of Albania’s formal accession to NATO.
Xhaçka said that during those 12 years of work and dedication, Albania has managed to gain the allies’ trust as a reliable partner and a major contributor to the Alliance’s collective security.
Xhaçka also stressed that their challenge is EU membership which, as she stressed, will be won step by step with plenty of work and dedication.
“12 years in NATO. 12 years of hard work and dedication, and we have managed to gain the trust of the allies as reliable partners and serious contributors to the collective security of the Alliance. Today, our challenge is to join the EU. With a lot of work and a lot of dedication, this challenge will be won step by step, starting with the organization of the First Intergovernmental Conference within the current year!”, said Xhaçka.
The United States Embassy welcomed the 12th anniversary of Albania’s formal accession to NATO, quoting former US President George W. Bush during his historic visit to Tirana on June 10th, 2007.
“Albania is a trusted friend and a strong ally. And this visit today hopefully with send a signal to the people of Albania, you can count on America, just as America can count on you to do hard work necessary to spread freedom and, therefore, peace,” Bush said during his historic visit to Tirana on June 10, 2007, as Albania was preparing to join NATO.
“Today, Albania celebrates 12 years of NATO membership and Albania can count on America and America can count on Albania more than ever! Happy 12th anniversary, Albania!” The US Embassy in Tirana tweeted. /ibna
