Albania will not attend the Islamic Conference

Tirana, 10 November 2015/Independent Balkan News Agency

Albania will not participate in the 9th Session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), which will be held on 18-19 February 2016 in Teheran.

Speaker of parliament, Ilir Meta has issued a negative reply to the invite in this conference, sent by his Iranian counterpart.

This means that Albania will not be politically represented in the meeting of the OCI member countries.

The negative reply is justified by “budget restrictions during this year and with the intensive political agenda”. This is said by the Adviser for Foreign Policy of the Speaker of Parliament, Ralf Gjoni.

The former speaker of Parliament, Jozefina Topalli, has participated in the 7th Session of the Parliamentary Assembly of OCI in 2012, held in Indonesia, where she was honored with a special prize.

Since 1992, Albania has been a full member of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.

On 23 October 1992, Albania issued a request to become a full member of the OCI, but Albanian parliament has never ratified Albania’s participation in this organization, leaving this situation unclear in the legal point of view.

In the recent years, Albania has been represented in the meetings of the Islamic Conference by representatives of a low level or it hasn’t been represented at all. /ibna/
