According to IOM (International Organization for Migration) more than 62,000 migrants and refugees arrived in Greece by sea during January, compared to 1,472 recorded arrivals on the Greek islands in January last year. The rise on the numbers seems impressive, but one must keep in mind that one year ago refugees and migrants arriving in Greece were not registered the way they are now. That means that on January 2015 much more than 1,472 refugees arrived in Greece.
According to the same organization during January 360 people lost their lives trying to reach Europe by sea.
