The general strike in Greece against the social security bill is considered by the unions quite successful. Successful are considered also the rallies of demonstrators in the central squares of many cities. In Syntagma Square in Athens about 50.000 people demonstrated until approximately 14.00 local time when groups of leftist, anarchists and other unidentified individuals started throwing at the police rocks and firebombs (Molotov’s cocktails) and the police replied with tear gas.

The majority of the demonstrators started to run in order to escape the tear gases, but the groups that threw the fire bombs continued their “fight” with the police – one journalist was injured up till now (14.40 local time).
