On Monday, May 11, will take place the first meeting between the Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades with Turkish-Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci. The two leaders will attend a dinner hosted by the Special Adviser of the UN Secretary Espen Barth Eide.
In a written statement by the UN Spokesperson, it is made known that the dinner will be held at the hotel Ledra Palace and will be part of the visit of Eide on in Cyprus May 4-12, during which he will have bilateral meetings with both leaders and other stakeholders, in order to finalize the arrangements for the resumption of peace talks.
Meanwhile, Nicos Anastasiades expresses readiness for a solution, which – as he says – he has proved on numerous occasions, especially in critical times. In an interview with the newspaper “Charavgi”, referring to the confidence-building measures, he notes that not only do they pave the way to substantially negotiation, but create new dynamics.
To the question whether he will discuss the return of the closed down town of Famagusta in connection with the opening of the port and the illegal airport of Tymbos, the Cypriot President replied that he does not wish to comment before the meeting with Akinci when these issues will be discussed.
At the same time, Anastasiades notes that got assurances from the US that they will get involved in the Cyprus issue, while he also refers to the willingness of Russian President Vladimir Putin to intervene where he can, due to his good relations with Turkey.
Finally, Anastasiades announced the visit of European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker to Cyprus, within the next few days.
