Population and power plants that provide heating to households will consume only domestically-produced natural gas from April 1, 2016 to March 31, 2017, according to a document of the National Energy Regulatory Authority (ANRE). The estimated total quantity of natural gas to be used by households and power plants in the said period is 42.3 million MWh, of which 34.8 million MWh in winter and 7.5 million MWh in the summer.

Domestic gas producers are under the obligation to make available these amounts of natural gas to cover the consumption of the population and power plants, reads the report.Romania consumed 121.1 million MWh of natural gas last year, down 4.5pct from 2014, that is 127 million MWh. According to the regulating authority, in December 2015 Romania used 7.5pct of imported gas, unlike the period before the economic crisis, when Romania had imported a quarter of its domestic gas consumption. Romania's gas consumption has decreased a great deal, especially after the closure of large industrial consumers.
