New tensions’ saga for Turkey’s accession at the EU
Difficult moments are coming for the negotiation talks between EU and Turkey. After President Junker, German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s quoted on the Sunday debate with Martin Schulz that European Union should call off membership talks with Turkey. “I don't see them ever joining and I had never believed that it would happen”, Merkel said during the debate. She added that she would speak with her EU counterparts to see if "we can end these membership talks". Her socialist electoral opponent, Martin Schulz, has already expressed the opinion that the talks would “freeze”.

Tension between Ankara and Berlin rose after the arrests of German citizens in Turkey. The arrest of several German nationals, including the Turkish-German journalist Deniz Yucel, the Istanbul correspondent for the Die Welt newspaper, made Berlin to sharply criticize Ankara over the crackdown that followed last year's failed coup attempt.

Today, the Commission repeated that President Juncker has quoted that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan “wants to put an end to the negotiations so that he can put responsibility on the European Union and not Turkey.” Despite being “good friends” with Erdoğan, Juncker said: “Turkey is moving away in giant strides from Europe.”

Next weeks would be crucial for the negotiations./ΙΒΝΑ
