Energy Union in Slovenia discusses possibility of general strike

Review Hari Stefanatos

A meeting will be held on Monday, during which the board of the Energy Sector Trade Union will reach a decision on whether to call a general strike as a result of the growing unhappiness regarding the conditions in the sector, especially at the state-owned power group HSE.

There is already a strike in progress by the miners at Velenje Coal Mines, which has entered its second week. An agreement between the unions and the government had prevented a generalised strike on March, but the situation at HSE has created new tension, especially after the measure that were taken in May to improve the company's financial situation, including an overhaul of the supervisory boards.

As a result, the union accuses the HSE management of trampling on workers' rights without engaging in dialogue, and demands that the government be implicated as an advisor in any strategic decisions in relation to the sector.
