"It is unthinkable to have been open during the Ottoman Empire era and be closed now".

His deep concern about the non-reopening of the Theological School of Halki expressed the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew during his visit to the President of the Republic of Greece Prokopis Pavlopoulos. "It's an issue that 'burns' us and I think it is inconceivable and unacceptable for such a school to have been set up under the Ottoman Empire and to remain closed for 44 years under the Turkish Republic", the Patriarch stressed, to add that "the fact of the forced silence of the School is not in line with democratic standards, with human rights and religious freedom".

The President of the Republic of Greece expressed the support of the Greek State to the overall effort of the Patriarch Bartholomew for the Patriarchate and in particular for the opening of the Theological School of Halki.

"The Theological School of Halki is not only a symbol, which concerns our Nation and Orthodoxy, but I am also well aware of the ties of the Patriarch with the Theological School of Halki, since it was the cradle from which you started your career and inspired you to be where you are now".
